As was mentioned in a previous article, Champions Online would be hitting the streets 1st quarter of this year. Well, that time has come as Champions Online has now gone free to play. It has adopted a similar system to other free MMORPGs that have made the switch in offering a totally free option, a silver membership which means you have paid a small fee at one point, and a gold monthly membership. Here are some of the changes that Champions Online has made in this transition to free to play:
Champions Online has adopted an archetype system for their superpowers. This is a change from the previous game as players are more limited in their options to choose their powers. Instead of having a character that has powers from multiple types, players will only have one or a few power trees for each character. This change was made to create more familiar player classes like tank, damage dealer, healer, etc. In addition, many of the powers have been changed from their previous incarnations so even an old player would notice a difference.
Champions Online also changed the new player experience. The tutorial and first zone have had been modified and more quests added. This was done to make it easier for new players to get into the game more. Some higher level zones have been changed a little as well.
The UI has been changed as well. It has been given a modern makeover to look better with the game. This also includes a big revamp of the cash shop to add more items that players can buy. There is plenty of ways to customize the look of your character. Gold or premium players will also have access to more options in the look and archetypes of their characters. Older players will need to convert their characters to the new archetypes as well before they can play them.
Overall, Champions Online seems to have made the transition well. While there are much more restrictions placed now that it is free to play, that is typical with the move to free to play. By moving to free to play though, Champions Online has the chance to get more players as it is the only major superhero game that is currently free.
