Perfect World fits what most look for in a free MMORPG game. However, it does not give you anything special or remarkable. Perfect World International (PWI), but does gives the player a good sense of what MMORPGs are all about. The game play is simple and effective. You are brought into the game with a choice of 3 races and a few different classes, with the option of picking up a second class later on, which I found very nice since I like to have only 1 or 2 characters, I was able to solve the problem of missing out on some features on the game by dual classing a and gaining a nice variety of skills. Right from the get-go you are set with a very simple, very effective pop-up guide, this is the best I have seen for any game. It is quick and after it’s finished you have few questions about how to do stuff within the game. Fighting in the game is simple. Click on your opponent use a few keyboard special keys and defeat them. If you expect your fun to come all from the battling experience you are in for a dull game. This game simply does not offer anything spectacular for battles. The player vs player system in PWI however is quiet entertaining and if you are interested in PvP style battles it is very fun, as it the territory wars. The territories are owned by the player guides in the game. Once a week these can be attacked by opposing guides for a fee. Up to an 80 verse 80 person battle can take place for the territory. With the mounts and the various other contraptions within these battles makes it an absolute blast. But you need to spent time on a character and join a guide with resources, meaning you can’t just jump into these PvP battles expecting to stay alive.
The graphics in the game are amazing. I found myself staring at the water as the reflections are awesome compared to other free mmorpg games even on my older machine. The landscape is colorful and believable. Your customized character looks exceptionally good with the millions of combinations and slider bars in the character screen when you first play. The worst part of the graphics is the look of the creatures you battle. They all seemed to come from the same late 80’s cartoon show, and do not fit the rest of the game. They ALL looked like they were pulled from a young child’s game and look even more horrible fighting your character. They are extremely colorful in neon-style colors but where you would think to see a wolf or snake-like creature, you find a smiling neon purple jack-o-lantern with giant teeth hovering around the field. The community of the game is, well there. Each city is populated with all sorts of levels, creatures, and classes. But it is just as simple to do each quest without help from the community. This really creates an environment where some simply ignore you and there is no player driven economy or support. You can get help and friendship within the game but it is not necessary and was the ‘vibe’ I got from other players. Since you really don’t need any help, you tend to get little help or communication. Obviously there are always exceptions, joining a guild, is helpful if you want to communicate with players, and compete but just to go stroll around with someone doing a quest is a completely different story. The Audio, sets the stage. Armor clanks, paws smacking the ground as you and your mount rush over the fields all sound superb. The background music has an early ‘rpg’ feel too it, but with an Asian twist. It is relaxing and keeps you relaxed as you fight on with the game.
Opinion:
I had a bit of a problem with the game. I use a Single core, Athlon XP-M 3200+ and an AGP ATI radeon 2600HD. Perfect World HATES ATI agp cards. I was forced to revert to some Omega drivers to get past the character creation screen. However, the game ran good on these drivers, and I was able to keep a constant 30-40fps, and only dipped when I was in towns. The game is easy to use on a low-end machine. Perfect World, is a great game for someone that is not looking to for a hardcore game. Any casual gamer is bound to enjoy an hour or two of this, but grinding gets old, the quests tend to have you run around the map to kill something and run back to get your reward, but this seems to be the future of MMORPGs. This game can become someone’s favorite very quickly, but I feel it will be hit or miss. Once I did a battle and realized it consisted of click and waiting for my F2 key to ‘cool-down’ I was bored. The most compelling thing that made me stay was leveling up and the weapons, but that however was simply not enough to stay around too long.
