WHAT STORY?

You’d think every MMORPG game has a back story. Even a kiddy game like Toon Town has back story. In Free Realms case, the background story belongs to the one reading this article right now. Yes, my friend, yours is the back ground story of the game. There is no lore about how the world of Free Realms was created or how you came to be. There is no story why there are two different races on this world. The story starts with you. Registering and logging in the game. The lack of a background story is something unique, new and refreshing. Let’s face it-with MMORPG today, people could really care less about what an NPC NEEDS. Most of the gamers want to finish t he lame quests just to get experience points. Quests in most MMORPGs are usually written in the most boring way imaginable and don’t even remotely tap the imagination of a fantasy role player. So what’s the difference with Free Realms? Quest actually mean something and inspire a feeling in the player that by doing the quest, he or she is doing something meaningful and that he or she effects the whole realm.NPC dialogue is never long-winded and boring.  Instead, it is fun to read and at most times very simple and direct to the point. That is how to game integrates you into the world. You are the one writing the story, you will have your own set of objectives, and quest lines are always specific to your character. What’s good about it is that you’re not really out to save the world like in most game who call warriors to save the world from an impending disaster, which never really comes.

CREATING THE FIRST CHAPTER OF YOUR ADVENTURES

Character creation is quite easy. Simply direct your web browser to www.freerealms.com and follow the online prompts after clicking the “create your own character” button. Choices for your customized avatars range from choosing your race (Humans or Pixie), gender and facial features. For the lazy couch potatoes, an option to quickly start a game with a randomly computer generated avatar is also available. As with all MMOGs there are strict naming conventions for your avatar so don’t be surprised if a swear word that is cleverly disguised as a medieval name is rejected by the system. Take note that the latest version of Macromedia flash must be installed and working properly in your browser for you to gain access to the character creation screen.

THE DIFFERENT CHARACTER JOBS

Before finishing the tutorial phase, please take the entire quest available in the newbie area. You will then be given two basic character jobs a Chef and a Brawler. There are no limits to the character jobs you want to choose. If you want the other special character jobs you have to pay monthly fee each character job has its own definitive quest to level the character job. If you want to change your character job, there is an easy button near your portrait. Simply click that and you can your character change like Superman, without the stuffy phone booth, or simply take a quest designed for a character job and your character will change its job automatically.

THE QUEST SYSTEM

How will you level up in Free Realm? Well, there are certain quests you need to take to do that. For example, to level up your brawler, you need to take quests that require you to beat enemies with your club. Every time you finish a quest. You will be given stars (which is equivalent to experience points) to level up your character. There will be no pointless grinding or accidental killing of high level monsters because everything is instanced. Before you subject yourself to beating, there will be a dialogue box indicating the difficulty level of the monster at your own level. There are three levels of difficulty, one dot represents easy, which means it is suitable to your level. For the other jobs, there will be special tasks for you to level up. For example, by cooking you will level up you Chef, and by training pets you will level up your Pet Trainer. There are a number of things you can do in this game, and you will not be bored.

CHARACTER JOBS

Character jobs in Free Realms are unlimited. Clearly, Sony will add more character jobs soon. There are two types of character jobs: one is free and the other is premium. The premium jobs can be unlocked only if you become a premium user. Premium users pay $5.00 a month-that’s roughly PhP250. Ouch!

CHEF
A Chef is, well, a person who cooks food. A Chef’s quests involve gathering ingredients with fun mini game. After gathering the ingredients, you will now be directed to use a  cooking table. There will be instructions on how to prepare the food, and you will be graded depending on how well you can cook  the food.

BRAWLER
The Brawler is the stereotype melee combat character in MMORPGs. Its quest involve giving monster a beating and using your skills to defect monsters.

NINJA
Ninjas are masters of stealth. Period. They are also experts in melee combat. They are usually stereotyped as characters that specialize in agility in most MMORPGs. To level up a Nina, like a Brawler, you must do quests. In order to take the Ninja job, you must talk to Master Ty in Lakeshore.

POSTMAN
Yes, there is a postman job here at Free Realms. If monster bashing is not really your thing, you can become a postman and deliver letters. To level up your character, you need to take delivery requests and you must be on time!

PET TRAINER
Pet Trainers will level up by training a pet. Pretty much a casual job, pet training is really fairly simple to do. All you have to do is train pets (redundant much?) Training them can be a bit fun since you get to trace lines on your screen.

KART DRIVER
Ah yes, who could forget the Kart Drivers? You can become one in Free Realms by talking to any Kart Driver trainer. You can take quests for Kart Driving or you can race with others. If you have played Crazy Kart, then you will have an idea on how to play this race in every track, you can collect power ups to use to your advantage.

DEMOLITION DERBY DRIVER
You must admit that Kart Driving is a bit tame. If you find it boring then take this job.

Truly this game was well-thought of. For a casual game, this game is fun and addicting. The mini games are well worth the time, and the different jobs you can take will remove the monotonous grinding in most MMORPGs players. I suggest you start with this game.
